Cataracts / Anterior Segment

The anterior portion of the eye, i.e. the front part, which goes from the outermost layer, the transparent cornea, to the posterior of the crystalline lens and which would be the equivalent of a camera lens, is at the epicenter of a number of eye and vision conditions, among which the most common, by far, is the CATARACT.

segmentos

A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens of our optical system, usually related to aging. A cataract operation, i.e., the surgical removal of the lens respecting the integrity of the transparent capsule, the transparent membrane that surrounds it, and replacing it with a transparent artificial lens using microsurgical techniques, is the most common surgical procedure performed today of all operations performed on the human body.

To date we have performed more than fifteen thousand cataract surgeries, from when we first started until the end of the 90s at Clínica Barraquer in Barcelona, then at different hospitals and clinics in Barcelona and, since 2004, also in Girona. We are pleased to offer our patients all of the newest, most advanced innovations available in equipment and techniques together with the latest generation of intraocular lenses through use of minimally invasive microsurgical techniques, topical anesthesia, microincision valve surgery that does not require the use of sutures, advanced, very precise calculation formulas (through preoperative use of IOL MASTER, HOLLADAY IOL CALCULATOR, ORBSCAN, advanced calculations for all types of monofocal, toric, multifocal and trifocal intraocular lenses, Haigis-L formulas and others for patients who have previously undergone LASIK surgery).

cataractes

In this way we have achieved unprecedented results, with a safety profile that is unique in our field and excellent improvements in vision following the surgical procedure, without need for glasses, not only for long-distance vision but also for short-sightedness (reading, etc.) for those patients who choose to have trifocal or multifocal intraocular lenses implanted. Through a combination of theoretical knowledge that is constantly reviewed, equipment, materials, all types of cutting edge technologies and surgical facilities that are unique in the city, we are able to achieve a fast recovery of vision following a surgical experience that is quick, painless and offers a great feeling of safety and comfort at all times. Due to the precision of the surgical technique and preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative antibiotic prophylaxis protocols, our rates of infection and reoperation have been zero since 2004. We hesitated for a long time before making this information public, so as not to tempt fate. Although, possibly, luck means being able to continue not to worry about the cost, regardless of the amount, or to skimp on time, in order to maximize safety and minimize any foreseeable risk before, during and after the procedure.

Aside from cataract surgery, we also specialize in the diagnosis and medical therapy, laser and surgical treatment of virtually every disease of the anterior segment: corneal disease, especially keratoconus; corneal transplantation (penetrating keratoplasty, DSAEK, DMEK, anterior lamellar keratoplasty, etc.); emergence surgery (trauma, etc.) and anterior segment reconstruction; iris surgery, with special emphasis on the surgical treatment of total or partial aniridia, from whatever cause, through the use of special aniridia implants and intraocular lenses, etc.

Glaucoma / Ocular Hypertension

Ocular hypertension is the permanent or intermittent elevation of the pressure inside the eye above the normal range. It is not a disease in itself but it is a risk factor because it can lead to glaucoma and cause irreversible damage to vision. This type of hypertension is common and has no outward symptoms, so […]
